It hits 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The M35i model generates 312 hp, shaving that 0-to-60 mph time to 5.2 seconds. All X2s include standard all-wheel drive and that quick seven-speed transmission. Mercedes pampers you with a plush ride, while BMW tightens everything for responsive steering and firmer suspension.

Interior Comfort and Cargo Space

The cabin design differs between the models. The GLA offers a welcoming space for five with comfortable MB-Tex or leather seats. The standard eight-way power front seats can be heated as part of an optional package, and the panoramic sunroof (also optional) makes the cabin feel much bigger than it is. There’s 15.4 cubic feet of storage space behind the back seats and 50.5 cubic feet when you fold them down, ample for weekend getaways.

The X2’s design derives from BMW’s X1, but it loses some headroom — 1.4 inches up front and 2.2 inches in back — thanks to that sporty roofline. Surprisingly, it doesn’t sacrifice much cargo space, unlike most coupe SUVs. Cargo space is plentiful — 25.3 cubic feet with all seats up and 51.7 cubic feet with the split rear seats folded.

Technology and Connectivity

Digital dashboards dominate both models, but they have distinct personalities. Mercedes provides a slick widescreen setup comprising two 10.25-inch displays sitting side-by-side for gauges and infotainment. The Mercedes-Benz user experience system feels remarkably intuitive, responding to natural voice commands and even utilizing augmented reality to overlay navigation directions on live camera views. Wireless phone connectivity comes standard, and you can upgrade to a premium Burmester sound system if you like.

BMW wraps the X2’s screens in a single curved glass panel. A 10.3-inch digital cluster faces the driver, while a 10.7-inch touch screen handles entertainment and navigation duties. BMW’s iDrive 8 system provides plenty of control options. You can choose to twist a knob, tap the screen, use gestures, or just talk to it. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly, and the Digital Key Plus lets you use your phone as a key.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The GLA comes standard with a rearview camera, but the optional surround view system provides a bird’s-eye view that’s extremely helpful for Chicago’s tight parking spots. You’ll also enjoy automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot alerts, a system that monitors for drowsiness, automatic parking, and high-beam assist as standard. The optional DISTRONIC cruise control keeps pace with traffic, which is welcome during rush hour on Interstate 90. It’s worth noting that the GLA hasn’t received official Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ratings yet.

BMW’s X2 has earned its safety credentials as an IIHS Top Safety Pick, scoring “Good” across all test categories; the NHTSA hasn’t yet rated it. Its standard safety package covers all the bases: blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning with automatic braking in city conditions, lane departure alerts, front and rear parking sensors, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic warnings.

Pricing and Value

The base BMW X2 xDrive28i starts at $44,300, and the M35i starts at $53,400.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 250’s entry price is $41,500, while the 4MATIC® model, which comes standard with all-wheel drive, starts at $43,500. The AMG® GLA 35 starts at $58,550. The GLA’s fuel economy is good at 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway, but these figures aren’t yet available for the new X2.

Long-term costs vary. Consumer Affairs estimates repair costs for 2025 at $1,390 for the BMW and $1,304 for the Mercedes. BMWs hold slightly better resale value after five years (50.7% vs. 48.6%), but these figures are dependent on the model. Both offer identical four-year/50,000-mile warranties.
