The diverse lineup of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans offers customizable layouts to suit various commercial and personal needs. Businesses love the Sprinter for its upfit potential, and Mercedes-Benz offers standard design packages for electricians, plumbers, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system technicians. In addition, you can work with an upfit design specialist who can build a custom van to meet your needs.

Before upfitting, you must select the type of Sprinter van. The 2500 and 3500 series vans offer different wheelbases, engines, and roof heights. Our experts at Mercedes-Benz of Hoffman Estates in Illinois put together this guide explaining the various types of vans and comparing the two Sprinter van series to help you make an informed buying decision.

Types of Sprinter Vans

Mercedes-Benz makes the Sprinter as a Cargo Van, Crew Van, Passenger Van, and Cab Chassis. Each model starts with a unique base suitable for adding specific features.

Sprinter Cargo Vans

The Sprinter Cargo Van is ideal for hauling cargo and accommodating various designs to suit specific business needs. For example, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van starts with two front bucket seats and a walk-through space to the cargo hold. You can customize the empty hold by installing shelves for delivery purposes or creating workspaces and cabinets for contractor applications. Cargo vans don’t have side or rear windows, making them ideal for upfitting and protecting your belongings.

Sprinter Crew Vans

Sprinter Crew Vans offers a combination of passenger and cargo utility. This van style has seating for five people plus ample cargo capacity, making it ideal for businesses that need to transport a crew and gear to a job site but also great for the average family. Crew vans have side and rear windows for enhanced comfort.

Sprinter Passenger Vans

Depending on your wheelbase, a Sprinter Passenger Van can transport up to 14 occupants plus the driver. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van makes sense if you need to shuttle people routinely, and it has plenty of cargo space for suitcases and other gear. For example, you can use a passenger van to transport a cleaning crew and equipment to the job site or to shuttle passengers from your place of business to the airport, hotel, work, or home.

Sprinter Cab Chassis Vans

A cab-chassis van offers more customizable features. This style of van lets you build from the chassis up to suit your needs. For instance, you can build a refrigerated cargo box for grocery delivery or create a vehicle with a hydraulic bucket lift to safely reach high places without a ladder.

Interior Features

Both Sprinter series vans have elevated interiors you expect from Mercedes-Benz, placing them a cut above the competition. You get comfortable, well-constructed seating, making long days behind the wheel more enjoyable — most seats swivel to make it easier to enter and exit the cargo area.

Mercedes-Benz designed its Sprinter lineup for business owners and families to customize depending on their needs. Both series offer the same design layouts for Cargo, Passenger, and Crew vans. You also have options for a 144- or 170-inch wheelbase, an extended length, and a high roof.

Not all business owners prioritize in-vehicle entertainment, so base models keep it simple. You’ll find a basic AM/FM radio with a small LCD screen, a single USB port, and Bluetooth®.

However, you can add the Premium Package, which includes a 7-inch touch screen, or the Premium Plus Package, which upgrades to a 10.3-inch variant with built-in navigation, a wireless charging station, and traffic sign assist. Both touch screens have preinstalled Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and include a Wi-Fi hotspot. We recommend the Premium Plus Package for its advanced technologies.

Seating Capacity and Cargo Space

Seating capacity and cargo space within each series vary by wheelbase, roof height, and van style. For example, the Passenger Van with a 144-inch wheelbase can seat 11 passengers plus the driver, while the 170-inch wheelbase version seats 14 passengers and the driver.

Crew Vans have two front bucket seats or a front bench. Owners typically use the available 240-396 cubic feet of cargo space by installing additional rows of seats. The front half of the crew van has side windows, while the remaining portion has none. Unfortunately, the Sprinter 3500 series doesn’t come in a Crew Van configuration.

The Cargo Van provides the most cargo space and payload capacity of all the Sprinter vans. The table below shows how van type affects passenger and cargo capacity.

Performance

Mercedes-Benz offers two engines for both series. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine produces 170 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. An optional high-output diesel engine makes 211 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Every Sprinter van can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The Sprinter 2500 Cargo Van has a starting MSRP of $49,900, while the MSRP for the 3500 Cargo Van base model is $52,800. The MSRP for the extended, high-output, high-roof 2500 cargo van is $68,400, and the top-tier 3500XD Cargo Van has a starting MSRP of $74,200.
